Yes. Retinal is one of the best vitamin A options for dry skin. Retinal needs just one conversion step to become active retinoic acid, versus two for retinol, making it more potent while staying gentle on a compromised barrier. Research shows retinal:

Dry skin happens when the skin barrier is compromised, letting moisture escape. This outer layer works like bricks and mortar: flattened skin cells (the bricks) held together by a lipid and protein layer (the mortar) that locks in moisture and blocks out irritants. When that lipid layer breaks down, trans-epidermal water loss rises and skin becomes dry, rough, and reactive. Common triggers include:

- Ageing, which thins the epidermis and slows lipid production
- Cold, dry air, wind and low humidity in winter
- Indoor heating or air conditioning
- Harsh skincare products
- Inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and rosacea

Dry skin is a skin type, not a condition: its skin barrier naturally makes fewer lipids, like ceramides, that lock in moisture, leaving it rougher, flakier, and more prone to water loss. Dehydrated skin is different. A lack of water in the skin that can affect any skin type, including oily, dehydrated skin. Both benefit from hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, but dry skin also needs occlusives and emollients to replenish lipids and prevent further moisture loss.

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. Its job is to keep moisture in while protecting your body from irritants, allergens, pollution, UV damage and germs. It also plays an important role in regulating the skin's immune response. When your skin barrier is healthy, your skin stays hydrated, smooth and resilient. When it becomes damaged, water escapes more easily through a process called trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). This leaves skin dry, rough, tight and more prone to redness, sensitivity and irritation. An impaired skin barrier is a key feature of many common skin conditions, including dry skin, eczema, rosacea and acne. Supporting your skin barrier with gentle cleansing, regular moisturising and evidence-based ingredients is one of the most effective ways to improve dry skin and keep it healthy.
