Does Drying Out Your Skin Cause More Oil? Here's What The Evidence Actually Says

In my practice, I must hear this one every day: strip your skin with a harsh cleanser or one too many acids, and it'll "panic" and pump out more oil to compensate. It's become one of those bits of skincare wisdom that everyone just… accepts. Influencers say it. Some brands say it (often right before selling you the gentle cleanser that'll "fix" it). Even some clinic websites say it.

So, I went looking for the actual study behind it. Spoiler: I couldn't find one. What I found instead was genuinely more interesting.

The short answer

No! There's no good evidence that damaging your skin barrier makes your sebaceous glands produce more oil. What is well established is that barrier damage makes your skin ramp up production of a completely different set of lipids, made by completely different cells, for a completely different job. More on that in a second, because the distinction actually matters for how you treat your skin.

Where did this claim even come from?

This is the bit that made me sit up. I traced the most "credible-looking" version of this claim, which was a 2025 narrative review in the journal Bioengineering back through its own citations to see what study was actually behind the statement that "barrier disruption from over-cleansing elicits compensatory sebum overproduction."

The citation led to a study testing the efficacy and tolerability of a specific cleanser-and-serum routine on acne-prone skin. Not an experiment on barrier disruption and sebum at all- but a product trial. A second commonly-cited source for the same idea turned out to be a practical commentary piece for clinicians on combining over-the-counter products with prescription acne medication, not a controlled study either.

This happens more than you'd think in skincare science: a plausible-sounding claim gets stated in one place, gets cited by the next person, and a few citation-hops later it looks like settled science, when really nobody ever actually tested it.

So, what actually happens when you strip your skin?

This is the genuinely cool part. There's decades of real, repeated experimental research on exactly this question. What happens to skin immediately after you disrupt its barrier? Researchers have been doing this since the 1980s (using acetone or ‘tape-stripping’ on skin, then watching what happens next), and the findings are remarkably consistent.

When you disrupt the skin barrier, your skin does mount a "repair response,” just not the one the myth describes. Disrupting the barrier triggers a measurable increase in the synthesis of free fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides in the living layers of the epidermis. That’s the exact lipid trio that makes up your skin's "mortar," holding skin cells together and keeping moisture in. Other studies in the same research lineage found this shows up specifically as a spike in cholesterol synthesis and confirmed that this lipid rebuild is the actual signal your skin uses to recover its barrier structure and function after damage.

Here's the key bit: this is happening in keratinocytes (your skin cells), rebuilding the stratum corneum. It’s not in your sebaceous glands, making sebum. They're different lipids, made by different cells, for a different job. Sebum is mostly triglycerides, wax esters and squalene; barrier lipids are ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. Conflating the two is a bit like saying "your car is low on oil, so it tops up its own petrol tank.” The systems just don't talk to each other like that.

The popular version of this claim seems to be a real phenomenon. It’s just wearing the wrong outfit. Your skin absolutely does compensate for barrier damage. It just compensates with barrier lipids, not oil.

"But my skin definitely gets oilier after I over-exfoliate"

Fair. And I'm not going to tell you that's not real. A few things are probably actually happening:

  • Inflammation, not oil, is causing a lot of the issues. Barrier disruption reliably triggers an inflammatory response in the skin, and inflamed, irritated skin can look shinier, feel different, and trigger breakouts that feel like "more oil" even when sebum output hasn't actually changed.

  • You may be confusing surface feel with sebum output. A compromised barrier loses water faster, which can paradoxically leave skin feeling both tight and greasy at different points in the day, as your skin overcorrects with moisturiser or your own barrier lipids try to patch the gap.

  • There's a genuinely different "rebound oiliness" phenomenon. But it's hormonal, not barrier-related. Stopping the oral contraceptive pill or other anti-androgen medication can trigger real rebound seborrhoea, because androgens (not barrier status) are the primary driver of sebum output. If your skin gets oilier after a hormonal change, that's a real thing. It's just not the "stripped skin" mechanism people usually mean.

The bottom line

"Over-stripping your skin makes it produce more oil" is the kind of claim that sounds mechanistically plausible and gets repeated everywhere. And when you actually go looking, it doesn't have a study behind it. What the evidence does support is something arguably more useful to know: damaging your barrier triggers a genuine, measurable repair response in your skin's own lipid production. It’s just the barrier-building kind, not the oil.

Practically, this changes nothing about what you should actually do: over-exfoliating and using harsh, high-pH cleansers is still a bad idea, because it disrupts your barrier and triggers inflammation either way. It just means the reason isn't "your skin is punishing you with oil." It's quietly trying to rebuild its own scaffolding, and giving it ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids to work with (rather than stripping them away) is what actually helps.
