Hydroquinone Is either Restricted or Banned in Many Countries. Here’s What You Need to Know

06 January 2026

Dr Ginni Mansberg

If you’ve ever gone down a pigmentation-treatment rabbit hole, you’ve probably come across hydroquinone! Long considered the “big gun” for fading dark spots and melasma. But as of 2006, the European Union banned any over the counter products containing  hydroquinone and even prescription products have to have a very low concentration.  And it’s also banned for over-the-counter use altogether in the US and is similarly restricted to prescription-only in Australia.

Why is hydroquinone so heavily restricted?

In short: safety. Regulators around the world have cited concerns around:

While the scary side effects aren’t common, they do occur. And given many drug regulators’ “precautionary principle” (if in doubt, err on the side of safety), hydroquinone got the chop in so many places.

So what are the alternatives?

This is the good news! We now have equally effective - and far safer - pigment regulators that don’t carry hydroquinone’s baggage. These include:

4-n-butylresorcinol: The modern star

If hydroquinone is the cranky old uncle, 4-n-butylresorcinol is the clever, well-behaved niece who quietly does a better job.

It works by selectively inhibiting tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1) and peroxidase- the enzymes that drive melanin production. Unlike hydroquinone, it doesn’t damage the cells, doesn’t damage the skin barrier, and can be used long term. Clinical trials consistently show it’s as effective, if not more effective, than hydroquinone, without the irritation or long-term risks.

Unlike Hydroquinone, there is very little 4-n-butylresorcinol absorption from the skin into the bloodstream, so it is considered safe to use in pregnancy and breast feeding.

And yes, that’s exactly why it’s the star of our ESK Enlighten.
