Is my teen too young for cosmeceutical skincare?

An opinion from Dr Ginni

If your teen is curious about cosmeceutical skincare, it's fantastic that they're taking an interest in their skin health (and at a stretch their overall health?!) But let's break down what this all means and whether it's necessary for them right now.

What’s the Difference Between Cosmeceutical Skincare and a Regular Moisturiser?

Cosmeceutical skincare products are a bit of a step up from the typical moisturisers you find at the pharmacy or supermarket. They often contain active ingredients designed to target specific skin issues like acne, pigmentation, or the signs of skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Think of ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).

On the other hand, regular moisturisers focus primarily on keeping the skin hydrated and may not have those extra active ingredients. They’re great for basic skin health and are usually more budget-friendly.

Do Teens Need Cosmeceutical Skincare?

For most teens, the answer is no. Teenage skin is typically resilient and doesn’t require the potent ingredients found in cosmeceuticals. Simple, gentle skincare routines are usually sufficient. A good cleanser, a moisturiser, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen are the essentials.

If your teen struggles with acne, incorporating ingredients like niacinamide, salicylic acid, and retinaldehyde can help. That’s reasonable even if your teen’s acne is mild.

Can Cosmeceutical Skincare Prevent Skin Aging?

There’s no solid evidence that using cosmeceuticals as a teenager will prevent skin aging later in life. A broad spectrum sunscreen on the other hand will do them a world of good, preventing not only skin aging but skin cancers as well! This amazing skincare product should be worn 365 days a year from sun up to sun down.

Are There Any Harms from Using Cosmeceutical Skincare on Young Skin?

There can be risks. Many dermatologists have reported that in their experience, teen skin can be more sensitive and reactive. So far, we haven’t seen studies to confirm this. Using potent active ingredients might cause irritation, dryness, or even worsen some skin issues like eczema. You’re not overreacting if you want to play it safe with your teen.

Should They Spend Their Money on It?

If it’s their money, it’s a good opportunity to have a conversation about making informed choices. Encourage them to do research and look for credible sources or studies, not just TikTok videos. If they find a study that convinces you, be excited to read it with them!

How to Have the Conversation with Your Teen

Start with Praise: Acknowledge their interest in taking care of their skin. It’s a great habit to develop early on.

"I think it’s awesome that you’re interested in taking care of your skin. It’s such an important part of overall health."

Educate Gently: Explain the difference between cosmeceutical products and regular skincare.

"Cosmeceuticals are like super-charged skincare products with active ingredients. They can be great for specific issues but aren’t always necessary for everyone."

Discuss Needs vs. Wants: Talk about whether their skin actually needs these products.

"Your skin is young and healthy. Sometimes simpler is better. We can always add more if needed, but it’s good to start with the basics."

Encourage Research: Suggest looking at studies together.

"I’d love to read any studies you find about these products. It’s important to make informed choices."

Budget Talk: Discuss the cost and if it's worth it.

"Cosmeceuticals can be pricey. Let’s make sure it’s something you really need before spending money on it."

Support Their Choices: Be supportive but guide them towards making smart decisions.

"I’m here to help you figure out what’s best for your skin. Let’s keep talking about it and find what works for you."

By having an open and supportive conversation, you can help your teen make the best choices for their skin health now and in the future. 🌟
