When I was growing up, no men used skincare. In fact, even sunscreen was for wimps. As time went on, “real men” - even Neaderthals like me and my friends started to use skincare.
While most men have come a long way in their views to use of skincare, there still is a view that men’s skincare and women’s skincare should be different. While I can see some marketing pros and cons for supporting that, the real question is, what does the evidence have to say!?
Spoiler alert: This is not meant to be political statement, but skincare ingredients are gender neutral.
Let me explain. On one hand, there are real differences between the skin of average men and average women. For example, on average men have skin that is thicker, more hydrated (with less transepidermal water loss), oilier and with more pigmentation than women. And men also have an average skin pH which is lower than women. These factors are important in designing tailored skincare routines. For example higher skin pH is associated with a higher likelihood of skin sensitivity and conditions (like acne and eczema), and oilier skin is associated with a higher risk of acne. Not only that, but where men tend to get more forehead wrinkles women have more marionette lines. So just based on those changes (and there are a few others too) it would seem to make sense that men and women use different skincare.
But, while on average men have oilier skin, some men have dry skin. And while on average men have bigger pores, not all do … and these differences are true for all of the skin types and conditions that we target in skincare. Regardless of your age and regardless of gender. The ingredients we use are gender blind. So, if hyperpigmentation is a concern and you have sensitive and oily skin, the ingredients used to manage that are the same, whatever your gender. And that is true for all skin types and conditions.
So why do we have a “Men’s Anti-aging skincare kit” on our website !?
Our men’s kit is designed for the “average” male skin (per the studies) and also takes into account that men historically usually had less patience for skincare than women (so we left out a product). And for the consumer who wants something in a hurry, it’s as good a guess as we could make.
Want better than that? Honestly, we wish that all customers either take our skin quiz or call our awesome customer service team. That way you will get a regime tailored specifically to your skin, not your gender
And if that all sounds like too much effort, we still have you covered… Our team gets in touch with ALL new customers to make sure you’re happy. We tweak things at our expense if needed – because great skincare should only be the start. Peerless results is what we really aim for!
