Pigmentation: what it is, why we have it, and when it goes rogue
Almost everyone has dealt with a dark spot, patchy skin tone or a mark that just refuses to fade. So let’s break it down, minus the jargon.
What is pigment anyway?
Pigment is simply melanin, a natural substance made by special skin cells called melanocytes. Melanin gives your skin, hair and eyes their colour. The more melanin you make, the darker the skin tone. Less melanin, lighter skin tone. It’s not just about amount. Not all melanin is the same. You have dark eumelanin and reddish pheomelanin. The more eumelanin your skin makes, the darker the skin tone.
Central to making any pigment is an enzyme called tyrosinase that is responsible for the first two steps in making pigmentation. The process is incredibly complicated involving multiple steps.
Melanin is made in tiny “factories” called melanosomes inside melanocytes and then passed up to more superficial skin cells, where it forms a sort of protective umbrella over the nucleus. The melanosomes not only make pigment but store it as well. The entire melanosome is transferred from melanocyte to the more superficial skin cells (keratinocytes) via the melanocytes’ tentacles called dendrites.
As keratinocytes mature and migrate upward in the epidermis, melanosomes begin to degrade. Keratinocytes with any leftover melanin in them eventually turn into corneocytes (flattened out dead skin cells) which are ultimately shed by the skin. The skin cell turnover cycle is usually 28-30 days in young people, stretching out to 40-60 days in more mature skin.
Does pigment have a good purpose?
Absolutely. Melanin is your skin’s built-in sunscreen. Its main job is to absorb and scatter UV radiation, helping protect your DNA from sun damage. This is why people with darker skin tones have a lower risk of skin cancer (in some studies up to 60 fold lower risk!). It’s also why tanning happens in the first place. Your skin is trying to protect you.
So pigment itself isn’t the enemy. The problem starts when the system becomes overactive or uneven.
When pigmentation goes rogue
Pigmentation becomes an issue when melanin is produced in excess, in the wrong place, or unevenly. This can show up as:
- Sun spots (solar lentigines)- which- by the way- affect 90% of people over 50- especially those of us with fair skin!
- Melasma (often hormonal)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (marks left after acne, eczema, bites or injury including skin treatments)
Common triggers include:
- Sun exposure (the biggest one)
- Hormonal changes like pregnancy or the contraceptive pill
- Inflammation from acne, rashes or aggressive treatments
- Genetics
Why is pigmentation so distressing?
Pigmentation rarely affects physical health, but emotionally it can pack a punch. Studies show pigment disorders can significantly impact confidence, self-esteem and quality of life, especially when marks appear on the face.
It’s also frustrating. Pigmentation fades slowly, can relapse easily, and often gets worse before it gets better. That combination makes people feel like their skin is “out of control”, which is stressful in itself.
The basics of managing pigmentation
There’s no quick fix, but there is a smart, evidence-based approach.
1. Sun protection is non-negotiable
No treatment will work if UV exposure continues. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential, even on cloudy days and indoors near windows. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVB and UVA rays, both of which contribute to pigmentation. Zinc based sunscreens have been found to be most effective for preventing pigmentation.
2. Be gentle with your skin
Inflammation drives pigment. Over-exfoliating, harsh scrubs and aggressive treatments can make things worse, not better.
3. Target melanin production
Ingredients that slow down melanin production. This will mean inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, responsible for pigmentation. This takes time and consistency, usually months, not weeks. One stand out inhibitor of tyrosinase is 4-n-butylresorcinol which is more effective than hydroquinone, arbutin and kojic acid but exceptionally gentle on the skin.
4. Slow melanin transfer
Slowing the transport of melanin from the “factory” to keratinocytes helps reduce pigmentation and one of the ingredients shown to help is Niacinamide or Vitamin B3.
5. Support skin turnover
Helping skin renew itself allows pigmented cells to be shed more efficiently. This needs to be done carefully to avoid irritation. Retinal is effective against pigmentation without being cytotoxic to melanocytes. It is also effective as an anti aging ingredient and is very gentle on the skin.
6. Manage expectations
Studies show people expect their pigmentation to disappear almost overnight- and yet this process takes time. Pigmentation often looks darker before it looks lighter. That doesn’t mean it’s failing, it’s just skin biology doing its thing.
The bottom line
Pigment is normal. It’s protective. It’s part of being human. But when the system misfires, it can be deeply frustrating and emotionally taxing.
The key to managing pigmentation isn’t aggression, it’s patience, protection and consistency. Treat the cause, protect the skin barrier, and give your skin time to recalibrate. Glow-ups, when they’re real, are rarely rushed.
