Planning a Pregnancy: Everything You Need to Know for the Journey Ahead

Hey there, future parents! If you're thinking about starting or growing your family, congratulations! Planning a pregnancy is an exciting, sometimes nerve-wracking adventure. But don't worry, I've got you covered with all the essential tips to get you started on this incredible journey.

  1. Check-Up Time

First things first, schedule a preconception check-up with your GP. Don’t have a regular GP?  This is a good opportunity to get one! This is your chance to talk to your doctor about your plans, get any necessary vaccinations, get your checks, like your cervical screening test (previously known as a pap test) and ensure you're in tip-top shape for baby-making. That means getting any health niggles, like blood pressure and blood sugar, checked and sorted. It's like a pit stop before the big race!

  1. Vitamins and Nutrition

Start taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid at least three months before you begin trying. Folate is a B vitamin that is found in some foods. Folic acid is a synthetic version of the vitamin that you can take as a supplement, usually as a tablet. In either form, it’s critical for your baby's development, especially in the early weeks.

Iodine is essential for maintaining the baby’s thyroid gland. Too many Australian women don't get enough iodine from the food they eat. So iodine supplementation of 150mcg per day is also recommended while you’re planning your pregnancy, during the entire pregnancy and while you’re breastfeeding.

  1. Eat Like a Champ

Eating a balanced diet is key. Load up on fruits, veggies, wholegrains, and lean proteins. Think of it as fuelling your body for the main event. And hey, it's a great excuse to ditch the junk food and try out some delicious, healthy recipes. Being in your healthy weight range when you conceive improves your fertility, reduces the risk of miscarriage and lowers the risk of issues during pregnancy.

  1. Know Your Cycle

Get familiar with your menstrual cycle. Lots of people think the day of ovulation is your prime time for conception, so knowing when you're ovulating can really boost your chances. Actually sperm can survive for between 2 and 3 days in your fallopian tubes waiting for the freshly released egg to arrive to be fertilised. The egg on the other hand only has a window of 12-24 hours to be fertilised after it’s been released. So sex before ovulation may be more likely to result in pregnancy.

  1. Get Moving

Regular exercise can help keep you healthy and reduce stress, both of which are great for fertility. Find something you love, whether it’s yoga, swimming, or just taking a brisk walk. Just remember, it's about staying active, not running a marathon!

  1. Cut the Bad Habits

Now’s the time to ditch any unhealthy habits. Say goodbye to smoking, cut back on alcohol, and maybe even ease up on that caffeine addiction. Your future baby will thank you!

  1. Have Fun (Seriously!)

This might be the best advice: have fun with it! The baby-making process shouldn’t feel like a chore. Enjoy this time with your partner, keep the romance alive, and remember to laugh along the way. Sadly it’s still a big No to alcohol!

  1. Partner Health Matters

Don’t forget about your partner! Their health is just as important. Encourage them to eat healthily, exercise, and address any health issues they might have been ignoring. Healthy swimmers are essential for conception!

  1. Know When to Seek Help

If you’ve been trying for a while without success, don’t be afraid to seek help. Fertility specialists are there for a reason, and getting a little assistance can make all the difference. Reach out if you’ve been trying for more than 12 months without success – or 6 months if you’re 35 or older

In Conclusion

Planning a pregnancy is a beautiful, exciting time. Take care of your body, enjoy the process, and don't stress if things don't happen right away. Every journey to parenthood is unique. So, buckle up, enjoy the ride, and get ready for one of life's greatest adventures. You've got this!

Best of luck and lots of baby dust to you!
