Why is my pigmentation not fading?

16 January 2026

Dr Ginni Mansberg

You’re doing “all the right things”. You’ve bought the brightening serum, you’re being patient (mostly), and yet those dark marks just won’t budge. If this sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. Pigmentation can be stubborn, frustrating, and slower to fade than we’d all like.

In fact, research shows more than half of people find pigmentation more bothersome than other common skin concerns like acne or irritation, and many expect results far sooner than biology allows. So, I wanted to dive into why pigmentation can linger and, more importantly, what actually helps.

First, a quick reality check

Pigmentation is not surface-level. Once excess pigment has been produced, especially after inflammation or sun exposure, it can sit deep in the skin. That means results are measured in months, not weeks. If someone promises overnight fading, keep your skepticism handy.

Now, onto what does make a difference.

5 top tips to manage stubborn pigmentation

1. You’re underestimating the sun (even when it’s cloudy)

If sunscreen isn’t applied daily, generously, and reapplied, your brightening products are essentially working uphill. We need to think of sunscreen as the foundation. Without it, everything else struggles.

Tip: Look for a broad-spectrum SPF  that you actually enjoy wearing. Consistency beats perfection every time.

2. Inflammation could be quietly fueling the problem

Pigmentation loves inflammation. Acne, eczema, over-exfoliation, picking, harsh actives, and aggressive treatments all send the same message to pigment cells: “make more melanin”.

If your routine stings, burns or flakes, that irritation can be perpetuating the pigmentation you’re trying to treat. And if you have acne or eczema, ensure you’re getting on top of that to slow down the triggers for new pigmentation.

Tip: Healthy skin clears pigment better than stressed skin. Get your underlying skin conditions well treated and avoid irritating procedures or skincare products.

3. You’re treating pigment, but not pigment production

Pigmentation isn’t just about removing what’s already there. It’s about slowing down new pigment formation.

That’s why ingredients that target tyrosinase (the key enzyme involved in melanin production) matter. This is where well-studied ingredients like 4-n-butylresorcinol come in. It works by gently switching down pigment production rather than irritating pigment cells into silence.

Tip: Go for 4nb as your gentle go-to tyrosinase inhibitor for daily use.

4. You’re relying on one skincare product to do it all

OK so you are targeting the cause of the pigmentation.... tick! But the creation and clearing of pigment is a really complex process involving quite a few different steps. Each of these steps responds best to different types of ingredients. And that’s why best results are achieved by a combination approach including ingredients like Retinoids (like Retinal), anti-oxidants (Like Vitamin C) and Vitamin B3.

5. You’re expecting results too quickly

Studies show many people expect pigmentation to improve within 1–4 weeks, but biologically, that’s rarely realistic. Skin cycles take around 28 to 56 days, and pigment often needs multiple cycles to gradually lighten.

Most effective treatments need 8–12 weeks before you see meaningful change, and longer for deeper pigmentation.

Tip: Take photos every month. Progress is often subtle week to week, but clear over time.

6. Your skin barrier needs more love

Pigmented skin often has a compromised barrier, which makes it more reactive, slower to heal, and more prone to ongoing pigment production.

Ingredients like niacinamide and ceramides help strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and even directly improve pigmentation. This is why “repair” products aren’t optional extras when treating dark marks.

Tip: Invest in barrier building skincare as part of your pigmentation fighting regime!

The bottom line

If your pigmentation isn’t fading, it’s rarely because you’re doing nothing. More often, it’s because the approach needs refining. Protect from the sun, calm inflammation, target pigment production gently, don’t just stop at pigment production use other supporting ingredients too, support the skin barrier, and most importantly, give it time. Pigmentation didn’t appear overnight. It won’t disappear overnight either. But with the right strategy, it will fade.
